Bruno Lina elected President of Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University
On Thursday March 20, 2025, Professor Bruno LINA was elected President of Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University in the first round by an absolute majority of 18 votes out of 26 cast.

Bruno Lina is an internationally renowned French virologist, professor at Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University and hospital practitioner at the Hospices Civils de Lyon. He became a professor in 2002, and since 2006 has headed the virology laboratory at Hospices Civils de Lyon. He is also director of the VirPath team at the Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie (CIRI - UCBL, INSERM, CNRS, ENS de Lyon).
A specialist in respiratory viruses, he has published over 470 scientific articles and is one of the 100 most cited researchers in microbiology. He played a key role in the fight against the H1N1 influenza strain in 2009, and against SARS-CoV-2 since 2020 as a member of the COVID-19 and COVARS Scientific Advisory Boards.
Director of the Centre National de Référence des Virus Respiratoires since 1999, he is an expert for the WHO and ECDC. He has chaired the European Society for Clinical Virology and sits on several international scientific committees. He is also an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur and a member of the Académie de Médecine.
Bruno Lina has been elected President of Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 for a four-year term of office. His aim is to embark on a profound transformation of the university, based on renewed governance, a stronger territorial base and assertive international ambitions.
A governance based on consultation and trust
Bruno Lina aims to establish a university management system based on dialogue, transparency and respect, to guarantee a fulfilling working environment for staff and students. A Vice Presidency of Human Resources will be created to support this transformation and promote the recognition of talent. A special effort will be made to strengthen internal exchanges and grant greater autonomy to the university's various components.
Enhanced influence at local, national and international levels
Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 aims to consolidate its position within the academic and scientific ecosystem. Locally, the university will strengthen its collaborations with the ComUE, HCL and national research organizations, while developing links with the socio-economic world and educational establishments. Internationally, it will be building on structuring partnerships, inspired by projects such as Shape-Med@Lyon and SFRI, as well as strengthened cooperation with the WHO Academy, to raise its profile in research and training.
A university committed to ecological transition and inclusion
Ecological and societal transition will be at the heart of Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1's strategy, with the creation of a Vice Presidency dedicated to ecological and societal transition (TREES). This body will define concrete objectives for a more sustainable and responsible university. In addition, a Vice Presidency dedicated to inclusion will be set up to guarantee an active policy in favor of the disabled, diversity and the fight against discrimination and sexist and sexual violence.
Excellence in research and innovation
Bruno Lina aims to position Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University as a leading player in the production of knowledge and innovation, in health as well as in science and engineering. Research will benefit from increased investment to attract talent, foster interdisciplinarity and develop cutting-edge infrastructures. Particular attention will be paid to global challenges such as climate change, public health and emerging technologies. The university will also support its researchers with competitive funding and publication grants, while promoting ethics and scientific integrity.
